EUS & ERCP

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)

EUS combines endoscopy with high-frequency ultrasound to obtain detailed images from within the gastrointestinal tract. It can be particularly useful for evaluating the pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, subepithelial lesions and selected lymph nodes or masses. Tissue sampling can be performed when indicated.

ERCP

ERCP is primarily a therapeutic procedure used to access and treat disorders of the bile and pancreatic ducts. Depending on the indication, treatment may include removal of bile duct stones, sphincterotomy, dilation or placement of a stent.

Choosing the appropriate procedure

EUS and ERCP serve different purposes and are sometimes complementary. The choice depends on the clinical question, imaging findings and whether diagnosis, tissue sampling or therapy is required.
